The Bookshop Band release WE ARE THE FOXES, their second album of 2016, inspired by a collection of books that revolve around stories of cities and those who live in them, curated by their local independent bookshop Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. The songs were first performed in front of the authors themselves at the bookshop’s events.

The city-tales that inspire this album span both time and continents; from the seedy printing worlds of London’s Victorian backstreets in MJ Carter’s novel The Infidel Stain, to the Australian high rises in Tim Winton’s Eyrie. The band sing on urban life through the many different lenses each book gives, via the lives of a household in Armistead Maupin’s groundbreaking Tales of the City series, to through the eyes of the foxes that roam the streets in Ned Beauman’s GLOW.

Listened to this album driving home the night lockdown was announced so I wouldn't be alone at uni and it really uplifted me on the journey. Every time I listen to it now I'm reminded of how surreal the experience was and how everything was so scary and uncertain and I wasn't even going to be able to hug my mum for a couple of weeks when I got home, but something about this album just felt so optimistic and comforting. Leaves such a warm feeling despite reminding me of an uncertain time. emilyra99

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser. Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this. Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?). With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6
