about

In the first verse, we tried to convey the idea that no one comes into this world alone. We are supported in one way or another by the people around us. The second half was getting this imagery of the world having a breath; a metabolism too, and we are supported by this breath ourselves.

In the chorus, we wanted to get a sense of movement and human progression--but as something in sync with the world around you, not overtaking or falling short. The last line is a take on "a safe and a just place”, a line that is reiterated regularly in Kate Raworth’s book.

The second chorus tries to make the point that growing fast is not necessarily a great thing. The line "path too steep" is a reference to what the graph of exponential growth looks like.

The second half of the second verse tries to get across that end goals shouldn't be the quantity but rather the quality of what you do, and measuring things with different standards, such as human happiness. Thriving is a better goal than growing.

In the final verse we just wanted to reference the fact that human activities need more Earths than we currently have to absorb human impact, and that we should see it as something which has limited resources, an idea proposed in island ecology / economy.

lyrics

Hush baby e’re you know
That the breath of the world surrounds you
And breathes in time too
Dream & take care in your stride

Breathe in
Finding your pace in the world that you face
And we hold, and breathe out
Breathe in,
Make it a safe and a beautiful place
And breathe out

Hush baby, try to sleep
Don’t you grow up too fast, there’s time to keep
Don’t make your path too steep
Dream & take care in your stride

Beauty is not a size
Nor is money the reason you’re alive
Find your own place to thrive
Dream & take care in your stride

Breathe in
Finding your pace in the world that you face
And we hold, and breathe out
Breathe in,
Make it a safe and a beautiful place
And breathe out

{{INSTRUMENTAL VERSE + CHORUS}}

Hush sweet, we gently call
That the world is an island after all
Softly rise and softly fall
Dream & take care in your stride
